The topic for Poppins Book Nook this month is Seasons, and I want to share our recommendations for different age groups on this topic. Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains affiliate links.
Preschool (3-4 years old)
The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons is an excellent introduction to the topic of seasons with bright illustrations and a small amount of text on each page. In the story a boy can enjoy his apple tree in different ways every season of the year, and the book can be used in a variety of art and science projects or unit studies.
Kindergarten-First Grade (5-7 years old)
Mo Willems’ Elephant, Piggie, and Pigeon are adored by every child learning to read (and their parents). City Dog, Country Frog is markedly different both in illustrations by Jen J Muth and in tone. The book describes an unlikely friendship between a dog relocated from a city and a frog. This friendship develops over one year, and the illustrations reflect seasonal changes in nature. The story has a subtly sad ending, and, depending on maturity of a child, he/she might get what happened or might not, but this really doesn’t change the charm of this book.
Chapter Books (6 and up)
I have to be honest here – I cannot really review Calendar Mysteries, because I haven’t read any of them myself. My fluently reading 6 year old read and enjoyed the whole set. She jumped from them to A to Z Mysteries where older siblings of Calendar Mysteries’ characters take over. Also, if we think about it, practically any book that spans a school year (Harry Potter, anyone?) can be considered a book about seasons too. An interesting assignment for older kids would be finding references to seasons and seasonal events in these books.
Art for Seasons
Fall is a wonderful time for seasonal art, and we have done some Halloween and leaf related art this year. But I want to share the family project we’ve done several years back for The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree. We only have three people in our family, so our project has three panels. It would be even more fun to do with four people.
